Start with the caller’s job
A useful props type explains how another developer should use a component. It should make required content obvious and prevent combinations the component cannot render meaningfully. Begin with real call sites rather than a long list of imagined future options. A project card that needs a title and destination has a clearer contract than a card that accepts every field optionally.
Make events describe intent
For a quantity picker, an onQuantityChange callback can receive the resulting number rather than exposing an internal button event. That gives the parent the information it needs without coupling it to the implementation. Keep native event types when consumers genuinely need native behavior. The choice should follow the boundary the component represents, not a rule that every callback must look identical.
Represent distinct modes explicitly
Suppose an action can either navigate or submit a form. Separate link and button variants so navigation requires a destination while a button can use a click handler and button type. A discriminating prop can help express the alternatives. Several unrelated booleans such as isLink, isSubmit and isDownload invite conflicting combinations that callers must learn through trial and error.
Preserve meaningful native capabilities
When wrapping a native input, consider which standard attributes callers still need: name, autoComplete, required, disabled and accessible descriptions are common examples. Compose the relevant React attribute types when appropriate, then refine conflicting fields deliberately. Do not accidentally discard an accessibility attribute because the wrapper copied only the props visible in its first mockup.
Keep optional defaults predictable
An optional visual variant can have a simple documented default, while essential information should remain required. Avoid type assertions that silence a missing field only to crash later in rendering. If a value arrives from an external API, validate it before treating it as the component’s trusted props. A compile-time type annotation cannot establish the runtime shape of remote data.
Review representative call sites
Write a minimal valid usage, a fully configured usage and several invalid examples. Check that the invalid combinations are rejected without making common usage cumbersome. Render long text, missing optional imagery, disabled actions and keyboard focus. The type is successful when it guides callers toward a useful interface while leaving the component’s real HTML behavior intact.
