Define the useful baseline
A portfolio’s baseline is its introduction, project evidence, contact route and readable articles. Those should not wait for a decorative animation script to finish. Write semantic HTML with ordinary links and enough content to explain the page. Enhancements can make that experience more convenient, but they should not be the only way to discover what the page contains.
Add behavior around existing content
A tools directory can render its full list first, then add category filtering and search after the client code becomes available. The original links remain useful while the script loads. In contrast, a directory that begins as an empty container offers nothing when loading fails, even if its finished interaction is polished.
Keep motion as a presentation layer
An assembly illustration can start in its completed arrangement and animate its pieces when the environment supports it. Text should remain visible if the observer or animation library fails. Avoid an initial state that leaves every section transparent until a script changes a class. The final composition should be a valid design, not a temporary failure state.
Be explicit about application requirements
Some tools genuinely require JavaScript to process an image or format JSON. Progressive enhancement does not mean pretending those operations work without it. Keep the tool’s explanation and instructions readable, and provide a clear message when the interactive capability is unavailable. Distinguish a real functional requirement from an avoidable dependency in the surrounding page.
Handle optional capabilities separately
Clipboard access, browser storage and image encoders can fail independently. A failed copy action should leave output selectable. An unavailable preference store should not prevent changing the current theme. A missing export format should produce an explanation instead of a mislabeled file. These small fallbacks preserve the task even when a convenience feature is absent.
Test deliberate failures
Disable scripts, block an optional asset, deny clipboard permission and use reduced-motion mode. Check what remains usable and what is explained honestly. Follow a link before hydration finishes and open a deep article fragment. Resilience becomes concrete when the page still communicates its purpose and offers sensible next steps under conditions beyond the perfect development preview.
